98 Quran memorizers attended the contest, held separately for men and women by the World Quran Memorization Association in cooperation with the Quran Memorization Teaching Soceity of Zanzibar, hqmi.org.sa website reported.
The participants competed in the categories of memorization of the entire Quran as well as memorization of 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 and 3 Juzes (parts) of the Holy Book.
Six prominent Quran masters formed the competition’s panel of judges.
Winners were announced and received their awards at the closing ceremony, which was attended by a number of officials and scholars.
Islam is the religion of about 35% of the people of Tanzania. On the mainland, Muslim communities are concentrated in coastal areas, with some large Muslim majorities also in inland urban areas especially and along the former caravan routes. More than 99 percent of the population of the Zanzibar archipelago is Muslim.
