TEHRAN (IQNA) – A ceremony was held on the weekend to commemorate 19th century Senegalese scholar and interpreter of the Quran Sheikh Mukhtar Kala Drammeh.

The Iranian Cultural Center in Dakar, teh capital of Senegal, hosted the event on Sunday.

More than 300 Senegalese religious, cultural and scholarly figures took part in the event, held to highlight the influential Quranic activities and works of Sheikh Drammeh.

Iranian Cultural Attaché in Senegal, Seyed Hassan Esmati was also present at the program.

Sheikh Drammeh (1790-1874) was a Quran activist who founded the Dar al-imam Mukhtar Kala Quranic school in the Salum region of Senegal.

The school has been active in training Quran memorizers and reciters for decades.

He also interpreted the Quran for the students and is known as Mufassir Mukhtar (Mukhtar, the Quran interpreter).
