TEHRAN (IQNA) – Commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran Border Guard Command Brigadier General Qasem Rezaei and his Iraqi counterpart Lieutenant General Hamed Abdullah Ibrahim Al-Husseini met in Baghdad on Monday to discuss measures to ensure security of Arbaeen pilgrims.

Planning for joint efforts by Iran and Iraq to facilitate the travels of Arbaeen pilgrims and ensure their security was among the topics discussed at the meeting.

They also exchanged views about ways to enhance coordination between the two countries border guards.

The eighth round of meeting between Iran and Iraq border commanders began on Monday and will continue for four days.

It comes ahead of Arbaeen and visits by a large number of Iranian pilgrims to the Arab country.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias, including many Iranians, flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

Arbaeen falls on October 19 this year.
