TEHRAN (IQNA) – Muslims in the Ottawa region of Canada will hold a candlelight vigil later today to mark the sixth anniversary of the Quebec City mosque shooting.

Candlelight Vigil Planned in Ottawa on Quebec City Mosque Shooting Anniversary

As Canadian Muslims gather across the country to mark a tragic anniversary on January 29th, Muslims in the Ottawa region will join them to mark the National Day of Action Against Islamophobia by doing something that was denied to them by convoy protesters last year – the freedom to come together in a peaceful public event to remember the six Muslims slain by a white supremacist in a Quebec City mosque on January 29, 2017 (details below).

The 2022 event, which was intended to mark the 5th anniversary of this tragedy, had to be cancelled when police advised organizers about online chatter by convoy protesters threatening violence and the safety of participants.

“Muslims and non-Muslim allies in the Ottawa region are thankful that they will have the freedom to come together to mark this occasion this coming Sunday and remember the six men who were murdered by a white supremacist while worshipping in the Quebec City mosque in 2017. Last year our freedom to peacefully gather was denied to us by so-called ‘freedom’ convoy protesters who had posted online threats which resulted in the event being cancelled due to public safety. What they did was a violation of our rights, and so this year we stand resolute in defending our freedom to gather to mark this solemn anniversary,” said Fareed Khan, founder of Canadians United Against Hate (CUAH).
