Egyptian Qari Mutawalli Abdul Aal’s Passion for Quran Recitation

IQNA – Sheikh Mutawalli Abdul Aal He was a great Egyptian qari who kept his passion for recitation until the last days of his life.

Born in April 1947 into a religious family in Egypt’s Sharqia Governorate, Abdul Aal learned the entire Quran by heart at the age of 12.

He then started learning Quran recitation by imitating the style of great masters like Abdul Basit and Mustafa Ismail.

After a while, he managed to create his own style of Quran recitation.

Abdul Aal travelled to many countries during his lifetime to recite the Quran and serve as board of judges in many international Quran competitions.

He had several trips to Iran, including one in 1991 in which he was accompanied by another renowned Egyptian qari Shahat Mohamed Anwar.

Abdul Aal died of a heart attack after performing the Isha prayers and reciting verses from the Quran on July 16, 2015, at the age of 68.

Friday, April 26, marked his birthday and the Egyptian news website Youm7 talked to Najah al-Sayyid Ahmed, Abdul Aal’s wife and children about him on this occasion.

Najah al-Sayyid Ahmed said Abdul Aal had inherited his beautiful voice from his father.

She said when reciting the Quran throughout his life, the qari maintained the Tawqa (God-fearing).

He was a trusted person with a purified soul and the door of his house was open to all people, she stated.

She also said that many people, including in East Asia, embraced Islam after listening to his Quran recitations.

Abdul Aal’s daughter, Nadia, who is a memorizer of the Quran and an English language teacher, said his father learned the Quran at the village Maktab (old Quran school).

She said a blind old woman named Sheikha Maryam taught him the Quran and he would always talked about her as his firrt teacher.

Salah, the renowned qari’s son, told Youm7 that his father gained fame after recording his recitations of Surah Yusuf and some other Surahs of the Quran in 1984.

After that, he noted, his father received a flood of invitations to travel to different countries to recite the Quran.

Salah also noted that his father maintained his passion for the recitation of the Holy Book until the last moments of his life.

He also said that eminent qaris like Mohamed Abdul Whab Tantawi, Farajullah Shazli, Abdul Fattah Taruti, and Ismail Tantawi recited the Quran at his father’s funeral.
