On Wednesday morning construction officially began on the new mosque.
“The most beautiful thing that you'll ever see is human kindness, and this support that we have been able to garner is a testament of that human kindness,” said Omar Rachid, with the Victoria Islamic Center.
Rachid says the new mosque is becoming a reality thanks to many generous people not only from all over the country, but the world.
“Ninety countries participated in the Go Fund Me campaign we ended up generating a little over 1.1 million dollars,” Rachid went on to say.
It took some time for construction to get underway, the bidding and design process took a little longer than expected, and then Hurricane Harvey hit.
“That basically put everything behind,” Rachid added.
Marq Vincent Perez of Victoria is currently charged with starting the fire, and remains in federal custody.
A hearing in Perez’ case is expected next month. “We are praying for his healing.”
Rachid says they hope to have the mosque completed by July.
