TEHRAN (IQNA) – An official with the Islamic Seminaries says that the stabbing attack at Imam Reza (AS) shrine sought to sow the seed of discord between Shia and Sunni Muslims in Iran.

“Such incidents generally happen to sow discord among Sunni and Shia Muslims and choosing the holy shrine and a number of Shia clerics as targets are not without reasons,” Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammad Hassan Zamani, Head of the sociopolitical office of the Islamic Seminaries, told IQNA on Sunday.

The stabbing attack took place on Tuesday at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in the northeastern city of Mashhad. The assailant was arrested immediately after the attack that targeted three clerics.

Hojat-ol-Islam Aslani succumbed to his wounds on the scene and was laid to rest on Thursday. Hojat-ol-Islam Daraei also passed away on Thursday in hospital.

Traces left behind by the killer signal that the crime has been committed by Takfiri terrorists, Zamani said.

“Crime is bad wherever it happens and it is worse if it is carried out in a holy place,” he noted.

Desecrating the shrine and undermining the security can be named as reasons for perpetrators to choose Imam Reza (AS) shrine, he said.

The official also hailed the Sunni scholar and people’s condemnation of the attack.

The revolutionary community of Iran is vigilant and will not be deceived by enemies’ plots, he said, adding that the Global Arrogance led by the US and Al Saud’s Wahhabism are behind these crimes.

The intelligence arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in the province said in a statement that the identity and nationality of the assailant have been determined.

It added that an investigation is underway to shed light on the incident, cautioning against any speculation before the results are out.
