Witnesses said the attackers entered the mosque complex around 11:10 p.m. local time (21:10 GMT), broke the glass panes, and dropped a leaflet of Letzte Rettung Germania, a neo-Nazi organization, before fleeing the scene.

The Siegburg Mosque is run by the Turkish-Muslim group DITIB, which denounced the attack and urged the authorities to provide more security for the places of worship.

The attack is part of a growing trend of anti-Muslim racism and violence in Germany, driven by the propaganda of far-right parties and movements.

According to police statistics, there were 258 Islamophobic crimes in the first half of 2023, including assaults on mosques, physical injuries, and threatening letters, Anadolu Agency reported.

A country of more than 84 million, Germany has the second-largest Muslim population in Western Europe after France. It is home to more than 5 million Muslims, according to official figures.
